Connor McDavid is currently the best hockey player on the planet. Numbers tell the tale. An unheralded talent who has dominated since day one, his torrid scoring pace is rare, bordering on unprecedented.
Connor McDavid currently leads the league in points (23), tied for third in goal-scoring, potting 9 through 11 games. While we’ve grown accustomed to McDavid’s world-class ability, his current output is extraordinary. And after last season’s incredible 105 points in just 56 games, it seemed unlikely McDavid could replicate his efforts, let alone top it. But he is.
McDavid has an astounding 225 points over his last 131 games. At his current season pace, McDavid is projected to finish with approximately 67 goals and 171 points. Not since the era of “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky have we come anywhere close to the numbers being put up by McDavid. Only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have ever eclipsed the 160-point mark, and they are arguably the greatest NHL players ever.
Whether McDavid can sustain his current output remains to be seen. But based on his career numbers to date (a 131-game sample size), what once seemed impossible appears to be within McDavid’s grasp. And it would be a historic feat.
Welcome to McDavid’s world. The rest of us are just living in it.
