Ryan Getzlaf distributed his 710th career NHL assist on Sunday night against the Montreal Canadiens, and it earned the star center his 989th NHL point in 1,111 games.
Getzlaf’s marker surpasses the previous record holder, Ducks’ legend, “The Finnish Flash” Teemu Selanne. The tipped pass by Getzlaf to Troy Terry earned the Ducks’ captain his 332nd career power-play point.
Drafted 19th overall by Anaheim in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Getzlaf’s played his entire NHL career with the Ducks and has served as captain of the club since Oct. 2010. A prolific playmaker and imposing power forward, Getzlaf won a Stanley Cup championship with the Ducks in 2006 and is a two-time Olympian, representing Canada to win gold at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Games.
Getzlaf is no stranger to Ducks milestones and records. During the 2008-09 campaign, Getzlaf matched a franchise record when he recorded five assists in a 5-4 victory versus the Detroit Red Wings. That same season, Getzlaf turned things up a notch by recording a franchise-best 66 assists and 91 points, good for sixth in NHL scoring. A 3x All-Star, Getzlaf is one of the best playmakers of his generation.
The next milestone on the captain’s list is the 1000-point plateau. As the longtime heartbeat of Orange County, replacing Getzlaf will be difficult. Until that time, fans bear witness to the 17-year veteran as Getzlaf continues to solidify his place in the history books.
