Marvelous Marvin Hagler passed away in March at the age of 66. Son James is a boxing promoter.
Marvelous Marv Hagler had a record of 62-3-2 in a career that spanned 1969 to 1988. Although the legend is gone, his legacy lives on in his son James Hagler, a boxing promoter, at James Hagler Promotions, LLC. I sat down with James recently to discuss his father’s legacy and get his views on boxing today.
McElwain: First of all, what is your fondest memory of your father?
Hagler: The day he got inducted to Las Vegas Boxing Hall of Fame and International Boxing Hall of Fame. He was so excited. He said, “When you get inducted here, you have finally arrived.”
McElwain: How do you hope your father will be remembered?
Hagler: For his toughness, his dedication to his sport, his boxing skills, his compassion, and his iron chin.
McElwain: Describe boxing.
Hagler: You have to be tough and dedicated.
McElwain: Would your dad approve of today’s boxers?
Hagler: He would approve of all of them and encourage them to promote more of themselves in the off-season
McElwain: The social media star Jake Paul has been making a splash in boxing. Do you think he is a real fighter?
Hagler: He’s not even close. He has to fight a real fighter and beat them before anybody can consider him a real fighter or have any place in boxing history.
