It seems that anything goes in today’s celebrity boxing environment. Those bouts generate plenty of attention and gobs of cash. Is there a limit to what makes sense?
YouTubers-turned-boxers Jake and Logan Paul are also boxers now, and each has experienced success this year. Jake KO’ed Ben Askren and also won by split decision against Tyron Woodley. Logan won an exhibition bout against Floyd Mayweather in June.
Now, Mike Tyson is interested in fighting one or both of the brothers.
In a recent episode of Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, the 55-year-old fighter expressed interest, but he also issued a proviso. It would take $100 million to make either fight happen. “Those are money fights, the fights that make the money. Seventy-five million people watching…. Yeah, I’d fight one of them.”
But there’s another issue here–age difference. Both Pauls are in their 20’s, while Tyson is 55 years old. We recently saw an age difference in play when Evander Holyfield (59 years old) took on Vitor Belfort (44 years old). The contest ended early for Holyfield that night.
If Tyson wants to continue boxing, more power to him. But let’s face it: he’s not the same fighter that we knew from years ago. That said, in celebrity boxing, we’re in an anything-goes situation. And Iron Mike is right about this: those fights are money fights. That said, I’d pass on this one.
