Dusty Baker has managed five MLB teams over his career–the Giants, Cubs, Reds, Nationals, and (today) the Houston Astros. There are plenty of stories to share about each of those stops, But this story connects his first and current stop in the Majors. Dusty, you see, has come full circle.
Dusty Baker was born in Riverside, California, the oldest of five children. He attended high school in Sacramento because his father worked as a metal technician at nearby McClellan Air Force Base. There, Dusty excelled in baseball, basketball, and track.
Athletics would be his career path. And in 1967, the Atlanta Braves drafted Dusty Baker in the amateur draft. But his dad didn’t want his son to play ball in the south. College was a better option he argued. It was to no avail. Dusty Baker knew all he had to know once Hank Aaron signed with the Braves. So he went against his father’s wishes and inked a contract with Atlanta.
Dusty Baker made his major league debut as an outfielder on September 7th, 1968. The team he played against that day … of course, it was the Houston Astros. Who could have thought that life’s journey would connect this way? Now, managing the Astros, Baker is competing against the Braves.
Life comes full circle.
