Where Will Cam Land?

, , , , ,

Houston seems plausible, possibly Dallas, or no place at all.

Cam Newton was supposed to be the successor to Tom Brady. Newton had signed with the New England after Brady was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. The franchise was now in his hands. Brady? Who knew? Well, we now know. The Patriots went through a playoff-less season at 7-9, third in the AFC East, and Brady went on to win Super Bowl 55.

This season New England will turn to another quarterback–not Cam, who has been cut–but Alabama rookie Mac Jones. But the big question everybody is asking isn’t “How will Jones do?” They are asking, “Where will Cam land?”

Will Texas call? First, there’s the Cowboys. Dallas just cut Garrett Gilbert, leaving the team with Cooper Rush as Dak Prescott’s backup. Jerry Jones could make Newton a one-year offer. Another possibility is Houston. Deshaun Watson is facing legal issues and also says he doesn’t want to continue playing for Houston. With Watson intent on sitting out for the season, next up is either Davis Mills, drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft (from Stanford), or Tyrod Taylor, who was obtained via trade from the Chargers.

But neither option beings much excitement. Mills made numerous rookie mistakes in pre-season games, and Taylor has been with three teams recently. And, not incidentally, new Texans’ GM Nick Caserio was Player Personnel director in New England last year. That means he was close to the Newton signing. That could very well mean Houston may be Cam’s next landing spot.

Other teams are looking at Newton, too. And, of course, there’s another option … Cam’s NFL playing days are over.

What will it be? The odds are that we’ll know very soon.
