Lil Nas X’s Sports-Themed Video Renders LGBTQ Empowerment

, ,

Lil Nas X just released his highly anticipated debut album, Montero. It serves a useful social purpose, too.

The album features Elton John, Doja Cat, Jack Harlow, Meghan Thee Stallion, and Miley Cyrus and includes songs like Call Me By Your Name, Industry Baby, One of Me, Lost In The Citadel, and That’s What I Want.

The music video for That’s What I Want opens with Nas X crashing from Earth onto a football field to play at Montero High School during a big football game. During the game, he gets injured and is benched. But this benching is what leads to him eyeing a fellow football player. After the game, both Nas X and the football-playing crush meet in the locker room. We then see a tribute to Brokeback Mountain featuring the two football-playing love birds.

Fast forward a few years later, and Nas X finds out that the football player had a wife and a son. Depressed, he turns to the bottle for comfort and hits rock bottom. But eventually, the problem is resolved with Nas X marrying a guitar, presented to him by actor Billy Porter. Strange, huh?

Recently, Raiders star Carl Nassib became the first openly gay player to play in an NFL game. So the timing for the football LGBTQ music video couldn’t be better for sports and society, where homophobia is alive and well.
