38-year-old Miguel Cabrera crushed his 500th home run last Sunday in Toronto, becoming only the 28th player in MLB history to reach that plateau.
With his 400-foot homer v. the Blue Jays, Cabrara joins “Big Papi” David Ortiz–the last player to hit 500–who did it on September 12, 2015. Cabrera also joins Albert Pujols as the only other active player with 500+ career HRs. He is the first-ever Detroit Tigers player to do it and the first Venezuelan-born player to achieve the feat.
And like many of those who came before him, Cabrera isn’t just a long-ball player. Consider what he has accomplished.
• 11x All-Star
• World Series champion (2003)
• 2x AL MVP (2012, 2013)
• AL Triple Crown (2012)
• 7x Silver Slugger Award
• 2x AL Hank Aaron Award
• 4x AL batting champion
• 2x AL home run leader
• 2x AL RBI leader
• career batting average of .311
• 2955 hits
• 1785 RBI.
Wow! And now Cabrera is just 45 hits shy of joining another exclusive club–becoming only the sixth player in MLB history to have at least 500 career home runs and 3000 career hits. With a bit of time, the player with that HUGE smile may do just that.
Miggy!
