De Grasse won the 200m sprint, setting a Canadian record time of 19.62 seconds.
De Grasse became the first Canadian since Percy Williams claimed gold in 1928 at the Amsterdam games. In winning, De Grasse shattered his own personal best time that he had set in the semifinals–a necessity because American sprinter Kenny Bednarek was breathing down his neck. Bednarek eventually settled for silver, while fellow American Noah Lyles took bronze.

A model of consistency, De Grasse has medaled in every event in which he has competed over two Olympic Games. Winning gold in Tokyo was De Grasse’s second medal of the games, having won bronze in the 100m dash.
You are an incredible role model, Andre De Grasse, and a great ambassador for the sport and your country. Mother Beverley De Grasse spoke for all Canadians when she told reporters, “Even though like I was expecting it, it was just still so surreal to really witness it.”
Hail, Andre De Grasse!
