4th of July Weekend Means It’s Time for the Annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition

The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating competition is especially relevant this year as the country wakes up from its COVID-related siesta.

Last year, Joey Chestnut beat his personal record by gulping down over 70 dogs. That’s a far cry from the number eaten by Jason Schecter in the inaugural contest (14), which took place in 1972. And Chestnut’s heroics is one reason why his name is synonymous with the annual competition.

But this might be Joey’s competitive finale. We’ll see.

On the women’s side, Miki Sudo won last year by scarfing down 48.5 dogs. Sudo is a competitive eater and doesn’t stop with hot dogs. In the photo to the left, Sudo is posing with another of her records — eating the most creme eggs.

You can watch the competition courtesy of ESPN. Tune in Sunday, July 4, at 11:30a for the women’s competition, followed by the men-eating side at noon.
