On Wednesday, former college/pro football player and Bachelor star Colton Underwood announced on Good Morning America that he is a gay man.

Underwood isn’t the first former or current LGBTQ athlete to make that declaration. Others include Caitlyn Jenner, Michael Sam, Ryan Russell, and Renee Richards. Recently, Outsports.com reported that “39 current NFL players have played with at least five gay or bisexual men who were out to their team while they were on the same team.”
Underwood said during the interview that “I’m gay. I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”
The problem is that most people expect football stars to be straight. An alternative is to accept people for who they are.
I congratulate Underwood on doing the GMA interview. He’ll no doubt be an inspiration to others.
