One year ago today–and at the age of 21–rapper Juice Wrld passed away due to an overdose of codeine and fentenyl.
Known for Lucid Dreams, Wasted, Robbery, Righteous, and more, his story began my mission to raise awareness on the issue of drug- and gun-related deaths in rap and sports.
Juice’s birth name was Jarad Anthony Higgins. And he had a link to sports, too.
He played Little League baseball while growing up in Chicago. Later, he made the Big Leagues, so to speak. On July 30th, 2019, Juice threw the first pitch at a Major League game between the Mets and White Sox. Juice wore a custom 999 White Sox jersey. According to him, he ‘had the speed.’ (The Mets won, 5- 2.)
Juice Wrld’s story will forever send a message that drugs can kill. RIP Jarad Anthony Higgins. 999 forever.
