Nadal Cruises Past Djokovic, Wins French Open

Consistency was the key for Nadal, who (in winning) vanquished the world’s #1 player.

Stade Roland Garros, Paris, Sunday, October 11: Rafael Nadal had little trouble with #1-ranked Novak Djokovic on Sunday, cruising to the French Open 2020 championship. In the process, the Spanish star broke Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slam wins in men’s singles.

The battle between the top two stars of the ATP rankings was anything but intense.

The Serbian star fought back in the third set, but (in the end) couldn’t muster a consistent answer to Nadal’s superior performance. The King of Clay Court won the French Open 6-0, 6-2, and 6-5. Nadal never lost a set the entire tournament.

Nadal’s first Grand Slam win of the year was his fourth consecutive French Open title and his 13th overall. He has won four of his other Grand Slam titles at the U.S. Open, two at Wimbledon, and one at the Australian Open.

In winning as he did, Nadal silenced critics who had been questioning his game. Personally, the 34-year-old star was just happy to win another title. “Honestly, I wasn’t thinking about winning the 20th Grand Slam and touching Roger’s record. For me, it is just another victory.”

It was Nadal’s fifth win in nine Grand Slam finals, but Djokovic is still ahead in the personal face-off. It’s on clay that Nadal excels, and the world saw that (again) on Sunday.
