What defines an athlete? It’s not just about getting in shape, being in shape, and having a healthy lifestyle. There’s more to it.
Being an athlete is about achieving goals. The goal may be to beat your big rival or win a championship at the season’s end. Whatever it might be, it’s about a goal–an accomplishment–that you set out to achieve.
And even if it’s a personal goal, most athletes represent something more significant than self, be it a sports club, a school, or a community. And nearly all athletes are guided by a mentor and/or a coach who helps close the athlete’s gap between aspirations and achievements–to take on a challenge and be the best that you can be.
What athletes learn along the way is that being mentally tough is just as important as being physically tough. That’s especially important when a game or match doesn’t go your way or when you don’t make that ‘big play.” You have to be able to bounce back from adversity.
And perhaps more than anything else about sports, that ability is something that an athlete carries through life. It’s about being able to move forward. Having goals and persevering through thick and thin, that’s what it means to be an athlete
