Ransey is a former wrestling coach and the lead singer/guitarist of Mize and The Drive.
Music and sports are like a hamburger with fries: One can’t exist without the other.
One of the many people that prove this right is a rocker and former wrestling coach, Lee Ramsey, who is the leader of the alternative group, Mize and The Drive.
I sat down with Lee and asked five questions.
McElwain: Thanks for sitting down with me. First of all, has sports-inspired any music?
Ramsay: I think so, probably some good and bad. Sports create a drive to improve that is good, but also create a competitive drive that I think can get in the way of enjoyment in music, if you let it.
McElwain: Currently, music and sports are on hiatus because of COVID-19. When this is over, what will be the new normal?
Ramsay: I’m not sure. I think it has forced many people to go digital or the social media route when they otherwise wouldn’t. But I think that is more an issue with the older generation.
McElwain: What were the favorite moments of your coaching career?
Ramsay: It’s too hard to narrow down. I would say as a State Champion in my last match would be one. I had a young man, who often got in trouble, show a tremendous amount of kindness to a student with a visual disability–and I don’t know if I’ve been prouder. My favorite connection to wrestling was watching my kids graduate, marry, and have kids. Special moments, for sure.
McElwain: What are your goals for the future of your sports career? And, finally, do you think you’ll coach again?
Ramsay: My biggest aspiration is to maintain contact with the kids I’ve coached. On coaching, I don’t see that happening. But you never know.
