As I travel around the globe, I’ve found that certain sports are more popular than others.
Sports play an important role in peoples’ lives. For some, there’s physical effort and lots of practice while, for others, it’s a hobby and lots of fun. And everywhere around the world, sports are followed passionately as players become fan heroes. How many times have you seen somebody wearing a shirt with a player’s number or name on it?
Here are three sports that I think top the popularity list.
Association Football or Soccer

Commonly known as soccer or football, association football involves two teams, each having eleven players. It’s played on a rectangular field with a ball and two goalposts at each end. The objective is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal without using the arms and hands.
Interest is massive! In total, football has over 3.5 billion fans worldwide and is played by more than 250 million people across 200 countries.
Football competition is carried by sports channels, including online, and is the rage at gaming sites, like pidgame1168.
Field and Ice Hockey
Field hockey has 2.2 billion fans in Australia, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Players maneuver the ball into the opponent’s goalposts by using a stick. In some areas, hockey is played on ice. It’s most popular in North America, Western & Northern Europe, and in the former Soviet Republics.
Basketball
Basketball is popular in the Philippines
One of the newer games around, basketball is also one of the most popular games in the world. Kids play it everywhere.
Interest in basketball is booming in Asia and Europe, including the Philippines, Japan, China, and countries across the Eurozone.
