On a team with many needs, should the Jets give Anderson want he wants?
Robby Anderson’s contract with the Jet is coming to an end at a time when the 26-year-old wide receiver has come into his own. This year he has five touchdowns on 49 receptions through Week 17 (going into the finale with the Bills). And if rumors are true, Anderson wants to be paid handsomely for that performance. He’s looking for a 4-year, $10 million contract.
Will the Jets be able to re-sign him?
Anderson was once labeled a “One Trick Pony.” That’s because most of his catches were by way of speedy deep routes. This year, though, his skills were used more extensively in the Jets’ game plan, including in short passes. And while Anderson has had his ups and downs with this team, QB Sam Darnold loves him.
The problem is that this year wasn’t Anderson’s best. That came two years ago when he had 63 catches for 941 yards. Those aren’t $10 million numbers. While Anderson’s supporters compare him to players like Tyler Lockett, Emmanuel Sanders, and Larry Fitzgerald–all of whom are getting paid between #10-12 million dollars a year–all of those players have more receptions and/or yardage than Anderson.
So a valid argument can be made that Anderson’s asking price is too high. $8 million a year seems more reasonable for a #2 wide receiver.
Besides, Joe Douglas has bigger fish to fry this offseason. The team needs a new offensive line, a better pass rush, and cornerbacks.
Great article. I like Anderson but that’s way too much money! Too put him in the same class as Fitzgerald is ridiculous. He still has a lot to prove. Thanks again Coach for another informative article.
