The Sports Column wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the efforts of founder Brett Dickinson. I recently interviewed Brett, and here’s what he had to say.

Kadin: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. First of all, what is your advice to aspiring writers?

Brett: My advice is to keep practicing your trade. There are always ways to get better, whether it comes by way of utilizing a thesaurus, using different punctuation, etc. The more you write, the better you will become. Find your voice and hone your skills.

Kadin: What are your goals for the future?

Brett: Though I had to step aside from writing for work reasons, I would like to see The Sports Column grow. It was developed when I couldn’t find an avenue to show off my work. It has always been an open website that allows inspiring writers to put their work on the internet. If we can help writers grow in their careers, we’ve been successful.

Kadin: I understand you have hosted The Brett and Barry radio show. What was that experience like?

Dickinson: Working on my radio show was a fun job, but it required a lot of hard work. It was exhausting with doing research, scheduling, development of the show, and much more. I also had to be topical and current with all aspects of sports. It was a great experience! I got to talk about sports and interview many great guests.

Kadin: What’s the inspiration behind your writing? How do you come up with what you write?

Brett: My inspiration comes from ‘that little voice in the back of my head.’ When you have thoughts about a topic, write them and down. Then start writing. See where it takes you. That’s the most important thing– beginning with a single thought and expanding it.

Kadin: Where do you see yourself in 40 years? What do you want to be doing by then?

Brett: I hope to continue making an impact in the community, whether it be my charitable work or mentoring aspiring professionals.

Kadin: Lastly, what’s your favorite thing to write about?

Brett: By far, it’s the NFL Draft. I’ve spent years following and learning about the nuances of the Draft, including researching prospects and evaluating team needs. I’ve concluded that the strategy behind a successful draft is value not need. That distinction separates teams–the not-so-good from good, and the good from great.

Kadin: Thanks, Brett!
