High School Football & Cheeleading Go Together Like Peanut Butter & Jelly…Or Do They?

,

Football and cheerleading used to go together, but neither makes much sense today. Football is dangerous. Cheerleading is an anachronism.

In high school, there are two main streets–football and cheerleading. Boys go in one direction, girls the other. But are these options all that they are cracked up to be?

Football: It’s a dangerous sport. More than a few analysts question whether young men should play the game. Concussions and CTE are two reasons.

Cheerleading: Nobody questioned cheerleading twenty, thirty, or more years ago. But does it make sense today?

You can argue that it’s sexist. You can argue that it’s unnecessary. And it’s probably the most dangerous activity in which high school girls can participate.

I propose cutting out both from the high school curriculum.

Make another school sport the focus in the fall. Involve girls in the school’s sports program. No need for either football or cheerleading.
