My reasons aren’t unusual. Other fans have stopped watching the NFL, too.
Don’t get me wrong. I have a deep respect for football as a sport. My family loves the Bears. I’m still amazed by the famous ‘Chicago Shuffle’ the team created in the 80s. But I’ve had it! Here are two reasons why.
1. CTE: Mike Webster, Andre Waters, Terry Long, Dave Duerson, Junior Seau, and Aaron Hernandez. What do these players have in common? They all suffered from CTE and committed suicide. The NFL still isn’t ‘all in’ on CTE, and the league isn’t doing enough to combat the disease.
2. Negative reactions to Colin Kaepernick’s protest: In 2016, Colin Kaepernick began kneeling for the National Anthem during football games to protest African American injustice in the criminal justice system. President Donald Trump got involved, saying that anyone who kneels should be thrown out of the league. Even country great, Hank Williams, Jr., got involved, singing, ‘Take A Knee, Take A Hike.’ Truth is there were loads of sports protesters before Kaepernick. Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali are examples.
The NFL football season is here and I haven’t written about the league and its games. It’s likely to stay that way–unless things change.
