With Larsen’s departure, managerial merry-go-round continues at Chippa United.
On Monday, Premier Soccer League-based side, Chippa United, parted ways with head coach Clinton Larsen. Larsen’s departure is the 19th managerial change in the last seven years. That adds up to a new coach about every four months!
This time the change came at Larsen’s request. Club owner Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi put it this way: “In our meeting on Sunday, he (Larsen) asked to be released from the club, so officially, we agreed to part ways. He…left after seeing that the target we had set, which he also agreed to, could not be met. He (Larsen) said he doesn’t want to be the reason for the club not doing well.”
The parting of ways isn’t sitting well with club fans, especially after Larsen had improved the team in his short stint of eight months. Larson had qualified the team for the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.
After listening to a radio broadcast on Monday night, one caller said of the chairman, “Chippa’s expectations are unreal, given the fact that the team sells top players every season. How does he expect one to win a trophy when he keeps selling top players?”
“Good luck to any manager who’s going to take over the reins at the club,” the caller continued. “Chippa should be surprised to see his team fighting for relegation come season’s end. The new coach will not have enough time to prepare with the players.”
It’s clear that no coach can satisfy Mpengesi. It might be advisable to take the club in a new direction–a road less traveled, such as occupying all senior positions at the club, just like Jomo Sono is doing at Jomo Cosmos.
What’s clear is this: the ‘chop and change’ culture at Chippa United needs to end!
