Hey, fellow student-athletes. Let’s follow the advice I share here. We’ll be thankful we did.
The school year is just around the corner. For some, it has already begun. That means it’s time again for academics and, for many, athletics, too. I’m writing this piece to those of us who combine academics and athletics as student-athletes.
Here are three tips for success that I follow myself. They’re more than tips, though. They are Three Commandments for Student-Athletes.
1. Don’t Do Drugs. You know why. You’ll get in trouble, perhaps get suspended, kicked off the team, or much worse. Drugs are a health risk. Make that a life risk. Include vaping on the ‘don’t do drugs” list, too. You know you shouldn’t do drugs. So just don’t!
2. Don’t Have Sex. You know why. Trouble looms. Just like with drugs, having sex can have life-altering consequences. Don’t risk getting sexually-transmitted diseases or becoming pregnant/getting your partner pregnant. You know you shouldn’t have sex. So just don’t!
3. Put ‘student’ before ‘athlete.’ About 2% of high school athletes eventually play D-1/D-2 football and basketball. For most of us, high school athletics is the last time we’ll play school-related sports. But no matter, school is always more important than athletics because school prepares us for life, including a job and career. Besides, who wants to get a rejection letter from our ‘Dream School’ because our grades weren’t good enough to get in?
Remember my Three Commandments for Student-Athletes. You’ll thank me for it.
