Kathryn Newton, Solid Actress and Golfer

Acting and golf figure prominently in Kathryn Newton’s life.

Have you ever heard the name, Kathryn Newton? If it sounds familiar, then it’s likely because you’ve seen her perform in movies and on television. She has appeared in Bad Teacher with Cameron Diaz and has a role in the HBO-produced, Big Little Lies.

But there’s another side of Newton’s life of which most people are unaware. Kathryn is an accomplished golfer.

Her dad, a big fan of the game, introduced Newton to the game when she was a toddler when he put a toy club in her crib. And as soon as Newton was big enough, he encouraged her to swing a club using soft, toy golf balls.

With lessons starting early in life, Kathryn was competing in golf tournaments by the time she was eight years old. She also began modeling and doing TV commercials. And while rejection is standard fare for actors, getting ‘no’ wasn’t a big deal for Newton. She’d tell her mother: “I’m not upset; I can go play golf now.”

After her family moved to California, Newton played on a high school golf team that won multiple state championships. And even though acting is her profession, golf is always on her mind. Newton told reporters that she would have played in the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open had she not gotten a role in Paranormal Activity 4.

But why choose one over the other when you can fuse the two? Newton does just that in videos produced by Golf Digest. She talks about the mental game, how to drive the ball, different clubs to use, and how to perform well under pressure, among other topics. Here’s an example.

In the future, I’ll bet we’ll hear more about Kathryn Newton … the golfer, that is.
