Concern about a life-threatening allergy prompts baseball management to drop peanuts from the stadium menu.

Ah! It’s Spring, and it’s time for baseball! There’s applause when a player hits a homer. And there’s great food, too–peanuts, popcorn, and cracker jacks.

Well, if you attend a game at Dunkin’ Donuts Stadium in Hartford, Connecticut to watch the local Yardgoats play, scratch one item from baseball’s traditional menu — peanuts. Team management announced recently that the stadium would be peanut-free.

And the decision has fans jawing.

Some fans think it’s a great idea because it makes the stadium safe for kids with peanut allergies. When interviewed by NPR about the decision, 11-year-old Trevor Hooker said that if he were to breathe in residue from peanuts “I could end up, like, seriously in an anaphylactic shock and end up in the hospital and possibly die.”

But the peanut ban has also brought out boo-birds. One person said if you don’t get peanuts at a baseball game,” then you’re not a real fan.” Another fan sang the classic Take Me Out To The Ballgame line, “Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack. I don’t care if we ever get back,” and concluded: “That line has to be in the song!” A third fan was more direct: “If I want to have peanuts, then I should be able to get them.”

About that line in the venerable song…. At Dunkin Donuts Stadium it’s now “Buy me a hotdog and Yardgoats Cap.”

So if you’re in Hartford for a Yardgoats’ game, instead of buying peanuts try a bacon-wrapped donut, or a Rice Krispy Treats chicken sandwich. And, while you’re at it, thank the folks who’ve made baseball fun (again) for people who suffer from peanut allergies.
