Sundowns face Egyptian power and eight-time winner, Al Ahly.
Current ABSA Premier Soccer League Champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, will be fighting tit-for-tat against the Egyptian giants, Al Ahly, in the quarter-finals of the CAF (Confederation of African Football) Champions League next month.
The draw took place last Wednesday in Cairo with the first leg scheduled to take place in South Africa on April 5th. The return fixture will be played in Egypt on April 12th.
Sundowns are the only South African side in the competition. Orlando Pirates were dumped out of the group stages via their last group encounter against Horoya FC of Guinea.
So now the Sundowns will not only represent Masandawa fans, they will be representing every South African, too.
National pride is at stake!
There’s a problem, though. Al Ahly has won the competition a whopping eight times! Sundowns have won only once. They did that three years ago, beating another Egyptian squad, Zamalek.
The task of winning isn’t insurmountable, but it will definitely be a challenge. Odds are against Mosimane’s men.
But the prize is hoisting South African’s flag as the team advances in this year’s tournament!
