Orlando Thumps Atlanta in AAF Debut

Spurrier, Gilbert, Garvin lead Apollos to inaugural AAF win.

The inaugural kickoff of a new football league, The Alliance of American Football (AAF), was a success. The Orlando Apollos, led by the ‘head ball coach’ Steve Spurrier, put up 40 points on their way to a 40-6 drubbing of the Atlanta Legends.

Former NFL players dominated the evening, including quarterback Garrett Gilbert, running back Akeem Hunt, and wide receivers Jalen Marshall and Charles Johnson. Linebacker Terrence Garvin had 11 tackles, a sack, and two interceptions, returning one for a late touchdown.

Garrett Gilbert looked poised in the pocket, completing 15 of 25 passes for 227 yards and two TDs. He also had a 5- yard receiving TD from Jalen Marshall in Orlando’s version of the ‘Philly Special.’

The much-hyped spring league was a welcomed success, in my opinion, not only because fans get to watch football after the NFL season ends, but also because the league looks like the real deal. Many players have NFL experience, and fans get to see a viewer-friendly game.

I look forward to watching the Alliance grow. I’m especially pleased that it provides players with an opportunity to show just how good they are.
