The ‘Special One’ deserves a better farewell than what he received at ManU.
Christmas 2018 saw one of the most shocking, yet expected, sackings in pro soccer–Jose Mourinho’s dissociation from Manchester United. The Portuguese man had won Europa League and the EFL Cup in his first season at Old Trafford, and the former Real Madrid manager managed a second position finish during his second season.
But Mourinho was highly criticized by Old Trafford fans and others for his on-field tactics and off-field press conferences. And worse yet, Mourinho had dicey relationships with most of the players and club management.
Growing unrest with star Paul Pogba exacerbated the situation, taking it to the next (and ultimately final) level. After each ManU defeat, Ed Woodward’s eyes were full of disappointment.
But despite all that happened in Manchester, Mourinho remains one of the most successful managers in football history. To say that comes with no doubt because of the many titles this man has won across Europe–in Portugal, England, Italy, and Spain.
And the blame for what happened at Manchester Union can’t be heaped on Mourinho alone. Players were responsible–perhaps more than anyone else–for the situation. Mourinho had faced similar fallout at Chelsea a few years earlier, and history repeated itself at Old Trafford.
I agree with what Mourinho told beIN Sports: challenges he faced at Manchester United were mainly due to lack of support. Mourinho said that issues on the management side of the club made the second position finish equal to winning a trophy.
At 56 years old, Mourinho is too young to retire. He’ll be with an elite club soon.
The ‘Special One’ deserves a better farewell, and I hope (for one) that he’s able to finish his career in a manner he deserves.
