This seems difficult for NFL’ers to learn: Don’t raise your hand to a woman!
Kareem Hunt was placed under the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt List by the NFL on Friday as a result of a video that surfaced from February 2018. The surveillance shows the Pro-Bowl running back-shoving, kicking, and attacking a woman.
Those behaviors allegedly occurred after a verbal altercation, which led to the woman attempting to smack Hunt as he retaliated simultaneously. Both the league and Chiefs organization were aware of the incident, but after the video had gone public, there was little choice left about what to do. The Kansas City Chiefs made a bold, but respectable, move by releasing Hunt immediately from the team.
The sophomore running back is among the best players in the league, and he plays on one of the best teams in the NFL. In releasing Reuben Foster last week, the 49ers were sending a message to players, other organizations, and the league that this type of behavior was intolerable. Both Foster and Hunt are great at their respective positions. Their careers are in jeopardy because of off-field engagements.
As the Chiefs push toward home-field advantage in the playoffs, they sent home one of their best players. For that, I give them a lot of credit. I love the direction and stance the league is taking and, more importantly, I like the fact that individual franchises are addressing matters, too.
What’s pathetic, though, is this. If Reuben Foster could get picked up (he did by the ‘Skins), then it’s likely that Hunt will be picked up, too–if there’s a chance that the NFL will allow him to play again this year.
Videos don’t lie folks. If not for the camera that caught Ray Rice punching his fiance in the face, he may have gotten away with it–still playing ball and making millions of dollars.
A few other things should be noted as this story unfolds. First of all, Hunt was not arrested that evening. He apologized for his actions. The explanation Hunt (and others) gave for the altercation was that they found out that the women in hotel rooms were under age (19). They were trying to kick them out. But there is also a conflicting rendition–a story that one of the females refused to have sexual relations with one of the men. That’s why she was asked to leave the room.
The lesson that seems difficult to learn for these NFL’ers is this: Don’t raise your hand to a woman! Ironically, Hunt wears the same number as Ray Rice!
