Remember the name Sunil Chhetri.
The football world has been fortunate enough to experience two of the greatest footballers of all time–Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Those two stars have dominated the game.
For a decade, they’ve shared the most prestigious award in football, Ballon d’Or. 2007 is the last time the award went to another player.
Is that domination coming to an end? Perhaps. There’s competition from a lad in India by the name of Sunil Chhetri.
Chhetri has played 103 matches for India’s football team and is currently playing for Bengaluru FC team in the Indian Super League. The striker winger recently made history by equalizing Messi’s goal count of 65 international goals.
What’s more, Chhetri scored those goals in fewer matches. He also stands second on the list of top international active goal scorers–behind (guess who?) a renowned player from Portugal.
But make no mistake about it: Chhetri has to stay on his feet. Others are on his heels, including Neymar (59 goals), Lewandowski (55 goals), and Suarez (55 goals).
Remember the name Chhetri. He is making international noise and–as football fans across India know–Chhetri is carrying the national team on his shoulders.
