Cristian Zaccardo experienced unimaginable ups and downs over his career. Winning the World Cup ranks at the very top.

In sports, players come and go. Generations come and go, too. And, over time, feats are remembered and some occupy mythic, iconic status.

The Sports Column spoke to Cristian Zaccardo recently. Zaccardo won soccer’s World Cup 2006 with his national side, Italy.

Ravi: Cristiano, many congratulations are in order for you winning the World Cup in Berlin. Could you take us through what motivated you to take up sports?

Cristian: Thanks for the compliments. At the age of 06, I did not like this sport so much, but many of my school friends went to play football. To be with them I decided to start with football. I fell in love with the game, immediately.

Ravi: Where did it all begin for you in football in Italy? Is midfield your favorite area on the pitch to showcase your magic?

Cristian: During the first 16 years of my career, I played all positions except standing in the goal post. Later on, I specialized in defense and played a few games in the midfield as well.

Ravi: Who were your idols and heroes growing up in Italy? Was there anyone outside Italy you idolized in Football?

Cristian: When I was young, my first idol was Marco Van Basten of AC Milan, and later on, Brazilian café.

Ravi:  The discussion of football being an easy career is often a controversial one; do you think being a modern day professional footballer is easy?

Cristian: I think that getting to great levels can now be easier than ever. When I was young, I gained experience in the second or third division. In the national team, too, it was difficult despite playing many games.

Ravi:  How did you cope with/overcome any setbacks you’ve faced during your career?

Cristian: I’ve overcome them thanks to my character. And to stay in the sport at high levels for a long time, one needs to have self-control and personality.

Ravi: Could you take us through what was going through your mind when the great Buffon conceded the only goal from open play in 2006?

Cristian: Nothing in particular. He’s a beautiful person with a positive heart always.

Ravi:  We understand a lot has been changed in the way football and the game has been played. What are your thoughts on that?

Cristian: Now football is much more physical and the speed is increased, but I do not know about the quality.

Ravi:  Modern-day football is rich, unfortunately, and often monotonous in top-tier games. We’ve had enough of ‘at. Could you tell more about Non-League Football and the state of affairs back home in Italy?

Cristian: In Italy, these days, many young players just play a few good games and make super contracts. Back in my time, I needed 2/3 years played well to make good contracts.

Ravi: What is the most unforgettable or most memorable moment of your playing career?

Cristian: Winning the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 victory against Serbia and Montenegro, and winning the FIFA world cup in 2006 against France.

Ravi:  What are your thoughts on having a solid foundation in academics outside the playing careers?

Cristian: I think it’s a great idea.

Ravi: Last, we are very happy with the success you have achieved so far. What plans are in times ahead?

Cristian: I am contemplating a decision to play for a few years and, later on, stay in football. I have a license for the positions of coach and sporting director.
