Real Madrid has a huge task ahead–to make a comeback in the La Liga. To do that, it’s time to shed Benzema, Bale, and Navas
Real Madrid is up against a wall, embarrassed 1-5 by El Clasico. Real Madrid was all over the place in the game. Defenders failed to track opponents leaving huge gaps at the back, Mid players didn’t control the game. Forwards missed easy chances.
Those performances represent a microcosm of Madrid’s season. And it’s why the club sits in the 6th position of the table.
Why is this happening? Real is trying to overcome a daunting challenge caused by the exits of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. Julen Lopetegui, the former Spanish manager, who was hired for Real Madrid duty was sacked after four months with the club.
Santiago Solari then took charge. And if he wants to stay in that role, I think he needs to consider making bold moves. Otherwise, Real’s standing will be relegated to past glory.
I believe the first move involves replacing rickety legs with lively ones–necessary to bring back energy on the field. In that regard, three players should be moved during the next transfer window.
Karim Benzema: Karim Benzema has been playing for Real Madrid for about a decade. It’s time that Real Madrid to calls it curtains for this Frenchman. Benzema has lost speed and accuracy on the field. His passing has gradually lost its spark. The former Lyon man scored only 5 goals in 23 appearances in his previous La Liga season, which is not an impressive performance by Real Madrid’s standards. Benzema’s performance in the El Clasico further proved that the old legs are not able to make routine finishes expected from a striker.
Gareth Bale: The fact that I’m naming this Welsh international may raise eyebrows in some quarters, but I believe it’s time for Madrid to replace him. Why? I contend that his performance last year was connected to the skill set of his former partner, Christiano Ronaldo. He’s a very different player–and a poorer on at that–without him. Bale’s inconsistency isn’t just a matter of Ronaldo’s departure. It’s also a function of his health. He has been on sidelines for significant part of the season with injuries. Bale was anything but impressive in the 1-5 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona–in a game where he left the field in the 77th minute of the match.
Keylor Navas: Keylor Navas had been the savior at Santiago Bernabeu, especially when Real was in trouble in the El Clasico. But with the signing of Thibaut Courtois, Navas is playing less. It’s clear now that he has forfeited his position to Courtois–even though Courtois had a terrible game at Camp Nou with an average rating of only 4.2 in the match. That poor performance, though, didn’t yield the position to Navas. Given that, I recommending using Navas’ market value to bring in players at other positions–positions where Real needs help.
