Arizona’s Khalil Tate, College Football’s Marked Man

, , ,

A guy like Tate only comes around every so often. And that time is now!

University of Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate is a marked man. And it’s a great, big, round target, too.

After a 3 and 9 record in 2016, the 2017 Wildcats managed an unexpected 7 and 6 turnaround. One reason is that Tate ran for 1,411 yards and passed for 1,591. The elusive QB grabbed headlines, a regional cover photo on Sports Illustrated and lots of nationwide attention.

So if a defense targets Tate this season, that team can possibly snag even bigger headlines, right?

WE STOPPED KHALIL TATE !!!

Meanwhile, back in the desert. The state of Arizona is overflowing with high expectations for a repeat performance. The possibility of a Heisman? Maybe.

But Tate’s critics are reminding everyone that running quarterbacks often find failure in the NFL.

Wait a minute! Tate’s only a junior in college. U of A has a new head coach, Kevin Sumlin, with a lot of talented players.

Football is still a team sport. And this team has a lot of green turf to travel before the NFL comes calling for Tate.

Let’s wait and see.

About Samuel H. Johnson

As a student at Miami University (Ohio) I spent a lot of time at the campus radio station WRMU and the FM outlet, WMUB. After graduation, I worked at various radio and TV Stations in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. I was a DJ, sports reporter, and on-air public affairs host/producer, winning three local Emmy awards. Along the way, I appeared in three major movies: G.I. Jane, CONTACT, and Runaway Bride. Today I live in Phoenix, Arizona with my wife, Laraine, and our two daughters, who live nearby. I enjoy writing about sports–mostly my own off-beat and sometimes humorous observations. I also like to write about history. I’ve written several books, including The Cherokee and the Slave. My favorite athletes (current) are Larry Fitzgerald, Ben Roethlisberger, Kawhi Leonard, and Roger Federer; (future) are Devin Booker, Tyler Ulis, and Paul Watson; and (past) Lenny Moore, Sonny Jurgensen, Bobby Mitchell, Charley Taylor, Steve Nash, Johnny Unitas, Charlie Joiner, Marques Haynes, Elgin Baylor, Dr. “J”. My unsung star is Bob Boyd, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver, 1950-57, and winner of the 100-yard dash at the 1950 NCAA Championships.
