The relationship between Trump and the NFL just rounded another dangerous curve.
The NFL and politics are getting tighter. Arizona Cardinals’ President Michael Bidwill is thrilled about Trump’s Supreme Court pick–his good pal from Georgetown, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whom Trump picked to fill the seat to be vacated soon by Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Why is the news? Bidwill made it news by sharing his opinion using the Cardinals’ official website and Twitter page.
In a re-tweeted post, an image of a letter by Bidwill (and other Georgetown alumni) addressed to Majority Leader McConnell and Minority Leader Schumer, states that “Brett was a team captain and multi-sport athlete, and an active participant in our student body.”
It continues: “Whether it is his long history of accomplishments in public service, volunteering at local civic organizations, serving meals to the less fortunate, or coaching our kid’s basketball teams, Brett has remained a ‘man for others’ through his actions and not mere words. He has consistently demonstrated his dedication to the premise that the pursuit of helping people, and not a political objective, fulfills the promise of human potential and government purpose.”
All nice words, indeed. But this is the same Michael Bidwill who was at the forefront of supporting the NFL’s new rule. That’s the rule which punishes a football team if a player kneels during the playing of the National Anthem.
At the time, Bidwill was quoted as saying “We needed to do something, and we wanted to respect all the parties around the issue, and we want our players to stand. The rule needed to be adjusted. I think it was a good, common sense result that was a result of a lot of compromises.”
A compromise(s) with whom? The NFL union and players weren’t involved. That means either Bidwill doesn’t know the definition of compromise or he’s restricting its use to a ‘compromise’ among the NFL elite.
The NFL rule is a clear case of muzzling black players from speaking out against police brutality.
I don’t personally have an issue with Bidwill supporting his friend. But he did it using his team’s platform. I suppose it’s his right (and property) to do so. But let’s face it: his hypocrisy is annoying. He’s a classic case of, “Do as I say, not as I do.”
Don’t hold your breath that Bidwill will have a ‘come to Jesus moment.’ He’s just a big ole’ HYPOCRITE.
