Madrid cheers, Barcelona weeps, in wake of striker’s announcement.
Antoine Griezmann has ended another summer of speculation about his future. He’s staying with Atletico Madrid.
The French striker had been heavily linked with a €100m (£88m) move to Barcelona. Last year he was a reported target for Manchester United. Now, the 27-year-old has decided to extend his four-year stay with the Europa League winners.
Griezmann said he’d clarify his future before France’s World Cup opener against Australia. He revealed the decision during a Spanish television documentary, ‘The Decision,’ which aired last Thursday.
The striker confirmed the news in a video posted on social media with the message: “My fans, my team, MY HOME!!!”
It was all a bit of fun, but not for Barcelona fans. They expected a different decision and so did Barcelona’s board.
Since joining from Real Sociedad in 2014, Griezmann has scored 112 goals in 209 appearances in all competitions and finished each season as the club’s top scorer. He also helped Atletico reach the 2016 Champions League final, scoring twice as they beat Marseille, 3-0, in last month’s Europa League final.
