A good coach knows that her or his job includes helping players develop into responsible human beings.
In sports, you have to train to be a good athlete. They need goals, too.
Different athletes pick different goals. Some pick a team goal. Others pick a personal goal. And sometimes they pick both types of goals. No matter what, though, players need to be physically and mentally prepared to reach the goals they set.
I’ve found that good coaching is a must for achieving athletic goals. And a good coach knows that her or his job includes helping players develop into responsible human beings–capable of handling whatever life throws at them.
But coaching today is more difficult than ever. A coach must be able to address health, legal, and parental issues. The players are different, too. Today, players are more likely to specialize in one or two sports, rather than play sports “by the season.”
My take is that it’s less important what you play and more important that you play. Playing sports enables players to be healthy, strong, focused, and mentally prepared to take on (and handle) a challenge.
The best coaches guide players to be good leaders and good followers–on the field or court and in life. That’s because good coaches set goals, too.
