Women play pro football in the eight-team Legends Football League.
The Legends Football League (LFL) is a 7-on-7 women’s tackle football league. The season runs from spring through summer, and games are played at professional arenas and stadiums around the country.
The league was founded in 2009 as the Lingerie Football League (LFL). The league’s reference to lingerie was taken literally from the outfits participants wore. But this “league” really wasn’t a league: it was an annual game offered as an alternative Super Bowl halftime show.
In 2009, then-LFL chairman Mitch Mortaza expanded the concept from a single game to a ten-team league. Later, in 2013, the league changed its name to become the Legends Football League. With the name change, participants wore “performance apparel” instead of lingerie.
The league has two conferences with four teams each. The Atlanta Steam, Chicago Bliss, Nashville Knights, and Omaha Heart play in the Eastern Conference. The Western Conference includes the Denver Dream, Los Angeles Temptation, Seattle Mist, and the Austin Acoustic.
I follow my hometown team, the Acoustics, a team that got its name from public submissions–named after Austin’s thriving music scene. The Acoustics play home games at The H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, TX.
It’s exciting football to watch, too. A good example is when the Acoustics played at home earlier this month against the Atlanta Steam. The game was decided at game’s end when–on 4th and goal–Austin QB Teshay Winfrey threw a slant pass to Michelle Marshall for an 18-14 win.
These women can play!
