It used to be a pass-through series for Golden State. But now the Warriors have a fight on their hands.
OAKLAND, CA – The Pelicans and the Warriors will meet each other again in the post-season, this time in the second round. The last time the two teams met in the post-season Golden State swept New Orleans in the opening round. The Pelicans couldn’t handle the Warriors, especially on the road. Besides, it was Anthony Davis’ post-season debut.
This time is different, though. Both teams go into the match-up with a good chance to emerge with a series win.
The Warriors took the regular season series 3 games to 1.
Keys to Victory, Warriors
Sharing the Ball: The Warriors’ offense relies on exceptional ball and player movement. In the series against the Spurs, Golden State averaged 26 assists per game (regular season average, 29.3). But remember that they played the series without Step Curry, who averaged 6.1 assists this season. Curry is expected to be back at some point in round two.
Consistent Team Defense: Golden State can’t rely on just defending Davis. All of the Pelicans’ starters have shown the ability to score, especially Holiday, Rondo, and Mirotic.
Keys to Victory, Pelicans
Offensive Versatility: Against the Blazers the Pelicans had three players score 30 points or more in multiple games. That shows offensive versatility. Davis is obviously option #1, but there’s much more to the Pelicans offense.
Interrupting Passing Lanes and Moving Screens: Ball movement and screens are the foundation of the Warriors’ offense. If the Pelicans can bother that movement then New Orleans has a chance to grind it out with the Warriors.
Conclusion
The Warriors are still the favored to win (Golden State is a hefty choice at -7.5/-8 in Game 1) but don’t expect this to be a sweep. The Pelicans are playing exceptional basketball and Davis is a mismatch anywhere on the floor.
Game 1 will be played tonight. Tip time is 10:30 p.m. ET
