“Under consideration” doesn’t automatically mean there will be changes soon.
Los Angeles – Commissioner Adam Silver held a short press conference before the All-Star game to address issues facing the league. One issue is the possibility of a new playoff format.
“You would like to have a format where your two best teams are ultimately going to meet in the Finals. You could have a situation where the top two teams in the league are meeting in the conference finals or somewhere else. So we’re going to continue to look at that. It’s still my hope that we’re going to figure out ways,” Silver said.
A lot of factors will need to be considered in any effort to change the current format. “Maybe ultimately you have to add even more days to the season to spread it out a little bit more to deal with the travel,” Silver said. “Maybe air travel will get better. All things we’ll keep looking at.”
One of the big issues is the current imbalance between the Eastern and Western conferences. The West continues to dominate the East in standings and in the number/magnitude of superstar players. A .500 record in the West isn’t enough for a team to make the playoffs, while that same record would likely earn an Eastern team a 5th-7th seed.
Silver has lots to think about.
