This city is dying for an NFL championship and the Eagles are one game away.
The NFC Championship game is on Sunday and my Philadelphia Eagles are, yet again, underdogs at home. The Eagles finished the season 13-3, but they were underdogs last week and again this week.
At 13-3, Philadelphia fans are tired of being the underdog!
I say: Bring on the Vikings! To win, the Eagles need to play the same game they played last week–behind a confident Nick Foles. Foles went 23-30 and threw for 246 yards after having a shaky first quarter. But, as the game went along, Foles got good protection, made smart throws, and didn’t have a turnover.
Alshon Jeffery led the team with 61 yards on four catches. But, on the downside, the Eagles didn’t score through the air. They’ll need to do that against the Vikings. Foles threw five touchdowns in four regular season games, but four of those scores were against the Giants. Foles needs to show that he can score against a top-flight defense.
Philadelphia’s run game needs to be on, too. Against Atlanta, the Eagles ran the ball 32 times for 96 yards and a touchdown. That’s decent output, but Minnesota’s run-defense will be a stiffer test for Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement. The Eagles third RB, LeGarrette Blount, needs to step up his game. Blount had only 19 rushing yards on 9 attempts last week.
On the defensive side, Philly has vets Fletcher Cox, Malcolm Jenkins, and Mychal Kendricks–all of whom exhibit leadership and have the talent to win. This season those three totaled good numbers–179 tackles and 8.5 sacks.
Philadelphia’s run defense is very talented, the best in the NFL.
The secondary, led by safety Malcolm Jenkins, has been very good, too, despite its youth. The secondary totaled 19 interceptions this year with one pick-6. Second-year corner Jalen Mills recording 64 total tackles, but he also had 8 penalties (a sign of youth), some which came at crucial moments in games.
Make no mistake about it: these Vikings are gonna’ have a hard time playing in Philly. The city is dying for a championship and the Eagles are one game away from the Super Bowl.
And, let’s face it: Philadelphia has an X-factor–its fans. Those fans will be loud, rowdy, and excited. The seats will be filled with green jerseys and plenty of dog masks.
The Eagles have one shot. That shot comes this Sunday starting at 6:40 p.m.
