It’s a time to celebrate Houston–the team and the city.
Baseball has been labeled “America’s favorite past time.” And in every major city across the country fans cheer hometown heroes.
As a child growing up in Houston, I ‘d often go to the Astrodome with friends and family to cheer on the Houston Astros. We watched great Astros players–players like Jeff Bagwell, Craig Baggio, Ken Caminiti, and Lance Berkman. We’d wear team merchandise to support our team, surrounded by others who were also clad in orange, blue, and white.
I remember the times when our parents would surprise us, saying they had tickets for Friday night’s game. It was extra special when there was a bonus–tickets in invite a friend or two.
After watching our heroes, we’d go to the sandlots and copy how they played–in hopes of one day playing just like them.
We got older, of course, but one thing didn’t change. We still watch our Astros play–now at Minute Maid Park. We’re loyal fans and we’ll be that way forever, uniting around the BIG H and that shining star.
2017 is an extra special year because the Astros are in the World Series. The last time was 2005 and the heartache remains of losing to the Chicago White Sox that year.
But for every memory that hurts, there’s a highlight to remember. Another one of those highs came last Saturday night when our Astros beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the ALCS. It was a time to celebrate Houston–the team and the city.
Congratulations, 2017 AL Champions, Houston Astros! Congratulations, Big H!
