Vandy Fans: It’s Time To Dream!

Let’s just hope Vandy’s dream doesn’t turn into a nightmare on Saturday afternoon.

Nashville, Tennessee is known for a lot of things–country music, great food, and just plain old country hospitality. You’ll note that college football isn’t on that list … yet. But something special may be happening to put the pigskin sport on the list. That something is the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Vanderbilt is off to a 3-0 start. Some may say, “Big Deal!” Dozens of college football teams start that way every year.

While that’s true, that’s not the path on which Vanderbilt typically travels. Vandy fans rarely get an opportunity to dream of a great season. That may be changing in 2017.

More impressive is the way Vandy has been winning games. Let’s start with the defense, which has been a Commodore strength. So far the Commodores have been spectacular — giving up only 13 points in 3 games (4.3 points per game).

And the offense is good, too, with 84 points scored over the course of the first three weeks. Yes, two of those games were against non-Power 5 conference teams, but let’s face it–84 points is still 84 points.

The most impressive win this year was last Saturday’s victory against previously ranked and undefeated Kansas St. Anytime you beat a Coach Snyder-led team you’re doing something right, and Coach Mason should be applauded for getting his team ready.

Beating K-State was just an appetizer. Fast forward to this Saturday. Vandy hosts top-ranked Alabama in what some experts say is the biggest game in program history. The game will be aired nationally on CBS at 3:30.

The question is whether the Commodores are ready for this moment. We know the Crimson Tide will be.

‘Bama plays big games every year, including against teams that are supposed to challenge the Tide’s SEC supremacy.

The team will be fired up and ready to go. Fans will be going crazy just thinking about the possibility of knocking off the big, bad Crimson Tide. I just hope everybody understands that nothing can take away Vandy’s already great start.

But, still …

Memo to Kyle Shurmur, Ralph Webb, and the rest of the Commodores: When your heads hit the pillow Friday night, it’s okay to dream the impossible dream of beating the #1 team in the country.

Yes, this really is the time to dream. Let’s just hope that dream doesn’t turn into a nightmare on Saturday afternoon.

My prediction: Alabama 31 Vanderbilt 10.
