What’s happening in Milwaukee this season isn’t about pitching, one player, or the manager. It’s about team.
When the Brewers finish play this weekend, they’ll be 13 games left in the season. But that gives Milwaukee ample time to either take the division lead or jump ahead of the Rockies in the Wild Card standings.
What a statement that is when you think how this team was being evaluated at season’s start. The Brewers were immediately written off. Then something amazing happened: Eric Thames historic April.
What has contributed to Milwaukee’s success?
But conventional wisdom took over again. Milwaukee couldn’t and wouldn’t sustain success. Yet here we are, folks, entering the final two weeks of the season — and the Brewers are very relevant, indeed.
Yeah, the pitching has been outstanding. Bullpen additions have made Milwaukee’s relief corps one of the best in MLB from the 7th inning on. But I really think what’s happening isn’t about pitching, or one player, or the manager. It’s about team. It’s about players pushing each other to be better. It’s about achieving a goal–something that few Brewers teams have been able to accomplish: get to the postseason.
Because every game will be important over the next two weeks there’s sure to be plenty of drama. Who knows, maybe Bob Uecker will bring back the famous ‘Harry Doyle’ for a little good luck. If so, let’s hope Milwaukee won’t be “Juuusssst a bit outside.”
