Beating the Mets was great, but let’s face it: the Yankees aren’t out of the woods. Success this weekend will require hot young bats and the ability to hold down the red-hot Red Sox.
The Yankees couldn’t have played the Mets a moment too soon. The Yankees were coming off of two tough games against the Red Sox and if by, some slim chance, they couldn’t figure out a way to win … well … then going into Fenway this weekend could have resulted in a gap-spacer for the Sox.
But thankfully the Yankees busted out of a slump and did so in a big way. They hit a home run in every game this week and that couldn’t have come from a better part of the lineup–my beloved “Baby Bombers,” that is, the young bats.
With the Mets out of the way and the bats swinging heavy the Yankees can walk into Fenway feeling good about their chances. The key is taking the Red Sox starting pitching out of the equation–just like the Yankees did earlier this year.
The objective is getting past the starting pitching no later than the 6th inning and delving deeply into the Boston bullpen. That will cause a ton of problems by the second–and especially–the third game because the Red Sox pen will be spent.
But let’s face it: the Yankees are far from out of the woods. Success this weekend will require hot young bats and the ability to hold down the red-hot Sox.
This weekend may decide the AL East race. The Sox are in the driver’s seat and the Yankees have to make up games. Otherwise, they’ll hand the division to the Sox–on a silver platter, no less.
Perhaps the Yankees will be helped by the distraction associated with the intent of the Sox to rename Yawkey Way.
Nothing less than a sweep is needed.
