July Turnaround Boosts Kaya Makati FC

Coach Noel Marcaida likes what he sees as Kaya moves to the top of the PFL table.

After suffering early-season disappointments, Kaya Makati FC has found its rhythm in July. The team is on a 4-game winning run. The wins are a result of good coaching and players who’ve stepped up to the challenge.

Earlier, Kaya found it difficult to score goals using a 4:4:2 formation. But the team has been unstoppable since dropping that system.

If you have asked me a month ago what Kaya needed I would have probably said that Kaya needed a striker. I certainly respect Senegalese striker, Robert Mendy, but I also know that skillful Ghanian goal scorer, Jordan Mintah, is one of the top strikers in the PFL.

Now the team is clicking. Kaya has the right men in a system that fits them. Only injury can stop Kaya from scoring goals.

Four consecutive wins over two weeks in July offer proof. First Kaya beat Stallion Laguna FC on July 5 at Biñan Football Stadium, Then came the hammering of Davaeo Aruilas, 5-1, at Davao Del Norte Sports Complex.

A 2-0 win over JV Voltes Marikina FC–a team known for playing good football–was further evidence that things were moving in the right direction. Finally, on July 19, Kaya beat Ilocos United, 5-2, at the University of Makati. The game featured Mintah’s hat-trick.

That last win vaulted Kaya to the top of the PFL table. The next game is scheduled for July 23 (again) against rival Ilocos United.

How does head coach, Noel Marcaida, explain the turnaround? “Basically it’s hard work,” he said. “The players have been playing consistently in training, and have been managed themselves well during the heavy schedule that we’ve had in July.”
