Storyline: Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan need time to develop. Browns should sign Jay Cutler as a bridge QB.
The Browns have been going with the strategy of bringing in veteran quarterbacks, then drafting a young guy, and finally pushing that veteran to the bench. Well, we know where that has gotten this team. (Hint: Nowhere!)
The Browns have two young quarterbacks already in house–Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan out of Stanford. One or both of those guys is on the cusp of becoming a starting-caliber quarterback. They just need the time to develop.
And there’s a veteran on the market who would allow the Browns to do just that. He’s Jay Cutler.
In my mind Cutler is a capable bridge-type quarterback. And I like some of the talent Cutler would have around him. The Browns have quietly rebuilt their offensive line with the additions of J.C Tretter and Kevin Zeitler, talented guys who supplement the Joe Thomas, a staple at left tackle.
The receiving corps isn’t exactly terrible. There’s Kenny Britt and Cory Coleman … and, perhaps, a potential draft pick.
In my opinion, the only capable Day 1 starting QB in this draft is Deshaun Watson. But the Browns can’t miss out on Myles Garrett in exchange for drafting Watson. Even if they draft Watson, I still wouldn’t see them getting more than 4-5 wins next year. That’s because Watson would go through rookie growing pains.
Cutler is just a better option.
With Cutler I could see the Browns getting 6-8 wins. That outcome would Cleveland fans hope. And hope is all that Browns’ fan have at this point.
