Storyline: One of the thirty-one records: Patriots’ DE Chris Long and legendary Howie Long are the first father-son duo with Super Bowl rings.
Was Super Bowl LI the greatest Super Bowl ever? Fans will debate the question, comparing Sunday’s contest to other great Super Bowl games.
Take, for example, Super Bowl XLII between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. The Giants won, 17-14, when Eli Manning threw a 35-yard pass to David Tyree, who scored with his arm extended and ball on his helmet. (Watch the video here.) Then, in Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants faced the Patriots again with the Giants winning again, 21-17.
But Sunday’s game may indeed be the greatest. Tom Brady now has his 5th Super Bowl ring, passing Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw, who have four apiece. And, on Sunday, Brady set a Super Bowl record of 466 passing yards on 43 of 66 passing, with two touchdowns, and one interception.
The biggest highlight though was “The Comeback.” The Pats were down by 25 points with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter and 18 minutes left in the game. But Belichick, Brady, et al. refused to give up. They outscored the Falcons 31-0 to win.
It was the first Super Bowl in 51 years to go into overtime. But another “first” wasn’t talked about much. Patriots’ DE Chris Long (Howie Long’s son) put the Long family into the record books: the first father and son duo with Super Bowl rings.
Thirty-one records were set in Super Bowl LI, making it one of the greatest–if not the greatest–Super Bowl game.
