Storyline: What a match in the Finals of the Australian Open! “This will be something to tell your children about.” Written by Kevin Ketchel, Brigantine, NJ.
It’s 7 a.m. East coast time and I haven’t slept. I’m standing on my couch in my boxers screaming at the TV. Then it hits me: I’m watching the Ali v Frazier of my day.
Both Rafa and Roger were on the comeback trail, starving to get back to the winner’s circle, and they just happen to meet each other in a seemingly pre-destined Clash of the Titans. And it definitely lived up to the hype!
Back-and-forth they changed the momentum, alternating sets ’til the inevitable fifth and deciding. And just when you thought they couldn’t play any better, they both dug deeply and took their games to the stratosphere.
Being a tennis fan and knowing what those two guys are all about, I didn’t want to see either of them lose.
Federer emerged victorious, but he shared the sentiment of millions of fans around the world afterwards by saying this: “Tennis is a rough sport, there are no draws, but if there ever was a match that deserved a draw it was this one.”
It has been an honor watching their battles over the years. If this was the last showdown, you couldn’t have written a better ending.
Chris Fowler, ESPN’s lead announcer, summed it up best toward the end of the match: “We are all lucky to be watching this right now. This will be something to tell your children about one day.”
I couldn’t agree more! But now I have to try falling asleep ….
