Storyline: Rex Ryan of the Bills has executed a number of moves recently, mostly out of panic, and mostly wrong moves–to fix what he thinks is broken.
When the Buffalo Bills hired Rex Ryan as head coach back in 2015 I thought they were truly onto something. He was a defensive coach. He brought in Greg Roman, a guy who made Colin Kaepernick look elite. Things looked on the ups.
But Rex panicked after an 8-8 finish in 2015. He saw job security on the line and ended up doing too much way too soon.
He got rid of Mario Williams. They needed to keep Williams at reduced salary and get the most out of a veteran pass rusher–something a lot of teams lack.
He hired his brother, Rob. Rob is a solid LB coach, but shouldn’t be a defensive coordinator. Despite having decent personnel he couldn’t get the job done with the Browns, Saints, and Cowboys.
Now Ryan has fired Roman, who’s a solid OC. Once an answer to the Bills’ offensive plight, Roman became a liability, a scapegoat, too.
Rex, oh Rex, what will you do next? And will it make any sense or do any good?
