Storyline: Who’s better? The answer is subjective, a matter of personal preference. In the end we don’t need a “right answer.” But if one is to be had, then I think it’s Ronaldo. Written by Suyash Maheshwari, India.
Real Madrid main man, Cristiano Ronaldo, and his arch nemesis, Lionel Messi, have been two of the most identifiable names in the world of football. Both men represent the epitome of football and are a source of inspiration for young athletes.
But when it comes to singling out who’s the best player in football today, there’s no right answer. So let me present the case of Cristiano Ronaldo for that title.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s passion–or rather his obsession–to be the best is a prime example of how talent isn’t enough to be successful. It takes persistent hardwork and dedication to achieve a level of greatness. While we don’t question Messi’s dedication to the sport, his unparalleled talent has brought him to be known as one of the true greats of football.
Ronaldo might not have control on the ball that Messi possesses, but power, speed, and physicality make him a more complete player–not to mention his supremacy in the air and his eye for scoring goals.
The Portuguese has won it all with the club and country (except for the World Cup). He recently added the European Championship to his already well-defined list of accolade. On the other hand, Messi has failed to win with Argentina, except for reaching tournament finals in FIFA World Cup 2014 and Copa America I, 2015 and 2016.
Ronaldo has managed to score more than 50 goals for the last six seasons. Messi saw a dip in form since the 13-14 campaign.
This year has been particularly good for Real Madrid #7. He won the coveted Champions League, which is inarguably the most important tournament at the club level. He led Portugal to Euro glory and also bagged the UEFA Player of the Year award. He is also believed to be the favourite for winning Balon D’or, which is the highest individual accolade in football. Messi, on the other hand, only won the Spanish league this season
Another factor that supports Ronaldo’s case is that he has played in three different leagues. He did well in all of them, particularly with Madrid and United, while Messi has been a constant at Camp Nou since the beginning of his senior career. He has no experience playing in a league that’s significantly more physically demanding.
Who’s the better player? The answer is subjective, a matter of personal preference. In the end, though, we don’t need “a right answer.” But if one is to be had, then I think it’s Ronaldo.
