Storyline: The Sports Illustrated cover says it all: “The Successor: That Hole The Broncos Had At QB? Consider It Filled.”
All the talk in Denver this pre-season has been about Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian competing for the starting QB gig. But there’s one guy who isn’t being talked about–and that’s the guy who should be the Week 1 starter. He’s Paxton Lynch.
Here are reasons why.
Size. Gary Kubiak and Rick Dennison have had offensive success with guys who are 6’6 and taller. Lynch at 6’7 fits that mold. The trend started when Joe Flacco used his size to take advantage of defenses via the play action. Kubiak helped Brock Oswiler do the same thing in Denver. I see no reason why Kubiak can’t have the same success with Lynch.
Lack of capable guys at his position. Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian are average right now, despite the fact that Siemian looks promising. Look, Sanchez hasn’t been great in his career–and that conclusion is well documented, dating back to his Jets days. I see him as career backup.
As for Siemian, there’s a lot of unknown. He has looked average in two pre-season games, despite reports that he has looked strong in practice. As a 7th round pick, I just don’t know how much you can really get out of Simean at this point.
1st round QBs should always start. There’s no reason why your 1st round QB–the guy you took to be “the franchise guy” should be sitting on the bench. By sitting Paxton Lynch, the Broncos will be slowing his development–and with no reasonable alterative at QB.
Bottom line: The Broncos don’t have a lot at QB. The best option is to start Paxton Lynch Week 1.
